Harness Racing makes a welcome return to the Cork Summer Show this coming Saturday 16th June after a lapse of close on 30 years. The Munster Agricultural Society having secured a new greenfield site just opposite the Curraheen Greyhound Stadium off the N25 Ballincollig bypass kindly offered the use of their new facilities to the Irish Trotting & Harness Racing Federation who are promoting and sponsoring this event.
The former showgrounds outlived its ability to host harness racing with the development of the GAA’s flagship complex Pairc Ui Caoimhe. Great names like Saunders Romeo, Riverbank Hal, Bellview, Aherla Hill, Matthew Spencer spring to mind, it was in the era of some notable racing characters like Jackie Sweeney, Tim Hegarty, Paddy Ryan, Danny Hourigan, Dermot Mahony Jackie Hayes to mention but a few.
